interview with Think Pink writer Lisa Clark posted by

We’ve been in pink-tastic love with British writer Lisa Clark and her whimsical teen guide “Think Pink” forever. Lisa and Fred have so much in common, spreading pink and positivity all over the world. Lisa has two new titles dropping this month, “Viva La Diva” and “It’s A Girl Thing” and in honor of her fabulousness we’ve invited Lisa to be a guest blogger here at BFF… Indefinitely! We’re happy to introduce you to your new BFF, Lisa!
Hi Lisa, thanks so much for hanging out with us! Can you tell us more about your wonderful word of Lola and “Think Pink”?!
I have got to start with a gush, because I am the hugest BFF fan ever and check in every day for my regular fix of cute so getting to hang out and be interviewed by your sweet selves is by far the biggest treat ever!
So, me, Lola and our world o’ pink - okay, so let me start by introducing Lola Love - our feisty, fun, fearless and fabulous hipster heroine of all things pink and positive. She has a series of go-for-it guides for girls including “Think Pink” and “Beauty*Licious” and is now sharing her adventures with the world in a series of fab fiction books too! Psst, wanna know a secret? I write them - it’s the best fun ever!
Lola and her kooky clique, The Pink Ladies, banish borin’ snorin’ monotone thoughts with pink thinking and replace them with the most exciting possibilities, because lets face it, life’s not a dress rehearsal, right? When you Think Pink, life is substantially a whole lot sweeter! because Pink Thinking is positive thinking. In the book, Lola has pinked-tinted shades to highlight the benefits of seeing the so-called ‘real’ world filled with it’s constant comparisons, unrealistic media images and a need to strive for physical perfection, in a different, more positive way. Y’see when you Think Pink, anything is possible. You can live a life filled with thousands of candy-kissed, sunshine moments because you’re in control. What’s not to love about that?
We’re super duper excited about your two new books! Tell us all about them and how they came to be.
Ohmystars - it’s so exciting, because we’re releasing two books at the same time - double the cuteness, double the fun! Viva La Diva has everything a girl needs to be fabulous on a daily basis! So many girls write to me (I’m an agony aunt for a girl’s mag here in the UK - Mizz) saying how they want to be famous like Lindsey or Paris, so I wanted to write a book that said “do you know what? So, what that Zac Efron doesn’t pick you up for school in a limo, that’s no excuse not to live like a superstar diva every single day!” And btw, I don’t mean a hissy-fit throwing celeb-girl, I mean a real life ohmystars-isn’t-she-amazing wonder-type woman! Lola and her Pink Ladies will show you everything you need to be a rockstar in the classroom, how to turn your walk to school into a runway show and how to have enough charm to have everyone join you on the pink carpet of fabulousness!
It’s a Girl Thing is a total celebration of all things girl, because let’s face it, being a girl rocks! If you have any questions about ladybumps, are pondering pimples, perplexed by periods or confused about what those boy-types are really thinking - then Lola and the Pink Ladies will help with everything you have ever needed to know about being a girl in Girlsville!
It’s incredible that you are a pink sprinkling heroine for teenaged girls everywhere. What were you like as a teenager?
Shux! I’m blushin’, FF - thank you! Being a teen girl in the world is hard work, that’s factuality! I wasn’t a size 10 so I got picked on quite a bit and didn’t ever get to date the cute dudes I crushed on, I lived with my pops so talking about girly things like periods and stuff was really weird and most of my time was spent crushing on NKOTB and Take That and writing in my journal. But wait, while you might want to throw a pity party in my honour, and believe me, I threw plenty in my time, it totally helped create the kick-ass, fiesty, fun, fearless and fabulous me today…
My love of boybands led me to following Take That all over the UK - it was the best time ever! I met my fave celeb boys, made loads of fab, like-minded gal pals who are still my BFFs today, I wrote about my adventures in letters and in journals and it also introduced me to a world that I fell head over glitter flip-flops in love with - showbiz!
At the same time, the fact that I couldn’t speak with my pops about all things girly meant I turned to magazines for all my girl-like info and discovered my dream job, right there in front of me - I could combine my love of writing and celebrities by writing for glossy mags about my fave celeb boys - what could be cooler?
So, from that moment on I became ed-girl of my own domain making zines for all my penpals about Take That and other fun stuff, I wrote to all my fave magazines a million times and got a million really polite rejections, but I didn’t care, I just kept going ’til the ed-girl of my favourite mag J17 - who is now author-girl Sarra Manning, got bored of me bugging her, and let me do an internship - it was awesome! Since then I’ve worked on celeb-filled TV shows and written for all my fave teen girl mags - Cosmogirl, J17, Sugar, Bliss and US mag Teen and now write regularly as an agony aunt for Mizz - it’s offish, I’m living the dream!
Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
I did! Although I dabbled with fashion design - I had a fashion wheel - did you have them in the US? and for a while I really thought I would have my own line someday, I also started a rap group with my friend Caroline, we were called Caz and Cool, we wore pink shell suits and did bad versions of Salt n’ Pepa! But I’ve kept a journal since I was about 9 it was the place I went to when life got too real lifey and I’d create a new, much more fabulous one! That then turned into zine making and then into journo-writing and now into book writing - I LOVE it! Do you know what? Writing really is the best self-help you can EVER give yourself - if you ever feel a lit bit low pour your thoughts onto paper, it doesn’t matter what comes out, it’s just important that it comes out and writing is such a great way to do that!
What do you think are the big issues facing teens today?
Not being ‘enough’ - not skinny enough, not pretty enough, not good enough - and that just makes me so unbelievably sad. We’re fed images of so-called perfection, of how we should look, how we should live at such an alarming rate these days, in mags, on the TV, on the radio on the internet, there’s literally no escape, and it just becomes so much harder for girls to know who they really are and to really dig that person, y’know? If a size 12, brunette girl with not very much money and living in a high-rise flat in Glasgow is told that Paris has a great figure, a great lifestyle, a great wardrobe, of course she’s going to compare herself and if she isn’t filled-to-the-brim with self confidence then she’s gonna start hating on herself and that’s just sucky. We can’t change the media-saturated world that we now live in, but we can work on boostin’ our bravado, educatin’ our sweet selves about how the media actually works and creating the most fabulous, happy-to-be-me verions of ourselves that we possibly can!
Who do you think are some good role models for teen girls?
I love girls who are completely rockin’ at what they do and not just famous for how they look or what they’re wearing (or not wearing for that matter!) Girls who are real, girls who celebrate their YOU-nique qualities, who rock at being themselves - take Vanessa Hudgens for example, if she had spoken out about those rudey, nudey pix and took responsibility for her actions, she would of shown us that she was a real girl who makes mistakes and I would totally put her up there as a role model, but she didn’t, so I’m not going to.
Someone like Kelly O is a great example of someone messing up their teen life and realising that the only way to get respect in the industry is to work hard and prove yourself, Kelly has a much better rep over here in the UK thanks to her stint in Chicago and I dig her for that…Other girls and women I think that totally rock are: Emma Watson - such a talent, Gwen Stefani - LOVE the Gwen, I really like Miley Ray too, but I’m so worried that she might go down the Lindsey route - such a fine line, but most importantly, while I love all things celeb-like, they have teams of peeps who make them look camera-ready on a day-to-day basis, it’s much more important to know that you’re your own hero-girl!
You actually reside across the pond in the UK… Tell us a bit about your life in Britain. We know you recently visited NYC as well. Care to contrast British and American culture?
Oh, I HEART all things US! I love the teev, I love the cities - NY and San Fran snow like a glitter globe in my heart, but most of all I love the positive ‘tude! I did come to NY recently and the minute you are surrounded by that NYC skyline, the air is just filled with possibility - when I’m there I feel like anything is possible, I believe I can be the best writer-girl in the world, because when I’m there that’s what I feel like! It’s truly an incredible city, the same goes for San Fran too, in fact my beau and I loved it so much we plan on moving there in a couple of years time - the US really fills up my positivity well in a way that the UK just doesn’t. I love the UK, especially Brighton and Bath and Manchester - visit both if you ever come to stay in the UK - but it’s true what they say about the British reserve, people are a lot less likely to toot their own horn or celebrate success here, but we do make great tea and cake…oh and our candy is waaaay better!
What’s next for Lola and Lisa?
The Pink revolution! We plan on painting the world a rather fabulous shade of pink - what do you think?! There are going to be lots more books - the fiction series kicks off in July 08 with Livin’ La Vida Lola and Tutti Cuti and The Rainbow Hearts, and there will be two more in November too! Other exciting news is that we’re launching a fabulous new website lolasland.com on April 14th where Lola Love will become the first book character with her own online virtual land - it’s going to be soo cool - you can go sign up right now, and we’ll send you all the deets as soon as it goes live! I’ll be doing lots of Think Pink workshops here in the UK which is the bestest fun ever and we hope to hit the states soon too - j’adore you guys!
