Dana
Carlson is one of our favorite artists. Her colorful paintings
of guitars, birds
and extreme weather will blow you away! We’re so thrilled we were
able to work
together on our 2003 calendar, my
teenage rock star fantasy. To learn more
about Dana visit her site danacarlson.com
So, Dana, we'd love to know which month of the
calendar is your favorite?
September! I think it's the boldest image of the bunch, a monumental
amp with a
Hostess cupcake background. Plus it has a nice palette of browns, pinks
and greens.
What jams are you rockin'
out to these days in your studio?
I just rediscovered the Pretenders first album - how awesome is Chrissie
Hynde?
Also the Detroit Cobras, Mink Lungs, Clinic. Oh, and I listened to X's “Los
Angeles”
every day that I worked on the calendar.
What song would be your Karaoke
hit?
"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" or, after a few cocktails, Led Zeppelin's "Black
Dog."
If you could hang out with
any rock star for one day, who would you chose?
I would travel back in time to go clubbing in groovy London with the
Beatles during the
time they were recording “Sgt. Peppers.” We could all drive
around in John Lennon's
psychedelic Rolls Royce.
Do you play any instruments?
I played electric guitar and bass guitar in 8th and 9th grade jazz band
until I dropped
out when they tried to force me to play in the marching band. That was
way too nerdy
for me.
What music got you through
high school?
I've been a music snob my entire life spending all my part-time job money
at the used
record store so the list is long! Beatles, Velvet Underground, The Smiths,
R.E.M,
Minutemen/Firehose, Talking Heads, Replacements, Echo and the Bunnymen,
The
Cure, The Clash, The Violent Femmes, King Crimson, Sonic Youth, Pixies,
Flaming Lips, Meat Puppets...
What was your look in the
80's?
It ranged from crazy pocket stonewashed jeans with extra zippers to corduroy
knickers
with blazers, thrift shop hippie wear to oversized men's shirts. I owned
three pair of
over-the-knee suede boots that I wish I still had now. And one can't
forget the stirrup
pants and the home perms. Ugh.
How would you describe your
painting style?
Painterly Pop Romanticism.
