| We think China Young
of Loop NYC is genius. So maybe we throw that word around a lot here
but in this case we really mean it. He’s super creative, takes
risks and makes stuff that is somehow super chic AND hilarious. A bag
from Loop NYC has bells and whistles - added details and doodads like
secret pockets, key chains, mirrors, etc – but will never break
the bank. This happy fact gives you all the more reason to pick up a
Loop NYC coin purse to tote all that spare change! Recently we chatted
up China to learn more. You and your team seem like you have such fun at work! What’s the best part about being creative director at Loop? Fun is when you are working and yet you don’t feel like it’s work! I adore what I do. We have a motto at Loop: "Dare to make new mistakes." Sometimes the mistakes become amazing design. If I won the Lotto, I would still be doing this. (But I would take longer vacations!) I love my Loop family. Can you tell us a little bit about your latest lineup of beautifully wacky beach bags? What inspired this collection? This collection was inspired by Lovey Howell from “Gilligan’s Island.” We love her so much! We wanted her to have a bag that Ginger would be jealous of and that would drive Mary Ann bonkers! Speaking of the beach, what was the best summer you ever had? Last summer (2004) on Fire Island was the best. It’s a piece of heaven on earth! I love sleeping under the stars on the roof of my beach house. What current design trend needs to get lost at sea? Why are people still wearing Uggs?!? Who are some of YOUR fave designers? FRED FLARE! (You were one of the design teams who inspired me to start up Loop.) I love D-Squared and whatever Apple does. (I can NOT live without my iPod.) Sound like music is really important to you. And, with items like the keyboard clutch and the electric guitar sling, it shows! Who are some of your favorite bands of all times? Madonna, MIA, The Killers, Le Tigre and, of course, GWEN! Since NYC is part of your company name, we had to ask… What are some of your all-time fave places in the city? Oh my God! I love PS 1’s Dance Party in the summer and I love people watching in all of NYC. You’re so funny and young at heart. What was your childhood like? Well, let’s put it this way: well-dressed, well-fed and very exposed. While all of my friends were playing football, I was redecorating! With so many amazing accessories in action at one time you must either be insanely efficient or a total workaholic. What do you do for fun and inspiration away from work? I love traveling! I am going to Argentina, Puerto Rico, South Africa (Safari!) and Vietnam this year. My travels to Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, England, Poland, Czech Republic, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Philippines, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Manhattan - because it IS a country in and of itself - have really inspired me. Also, I have ADHD and I make quick decisions, which I guess makes me efficient… What advice would you give our readers who dream of starting their own accessory line? Design from the gut and DO NOT BE AFRAID! Okay…time for our SPEED ROUND! FAVE COLOR: royal blue (is the new black) FAVE CANDY: Tamarind FAVE BOOK: Does US Weekly count? FAVE FOOD: Sushi Sushi Sashimi Sushi FAVE MOVIE: Being Julia 04/2005 |
