The difference between living in NYC instead of anywhere else is that it is the center
of pretty much everything… especially fashion! You really experience this firsthand
during Fashion Week as the city turns into a week-long runway show. The tents are
set up in Bryant Park, there are events all over the city and fashion shows pop up at
the strangest venues. Sometimes you don’t even know you just walked by an
important show until you read about it the next day in the paper. It’s fun to see
what’s happening, scout some new trends and compare stories.

On Tuesday, the first official day of fashion week, the fred flare gang was walking to
the subway after attending a birthday party. We were talking about the HotPants trend
for Spring and laughing about "HotPants" being one word and spelled with a capital "H"
and a capital "P". Strolling along we noticed a lot of hoopla at the new Maurice Villency
flagship on 57th Street. Inside the brightly-lit store there were models pressed against
the windows, photographers, security and tons of gawking passersbys. We peeked in
for a second but continued on our way.

The next day we read in Women’s Wear Daily that we had just missed Imitation of
Christ presenting their Spring collection. They are known for their unique presentations
and this one was no exception. They showed over 100 looks encased in glass, their
latest reworked vintage pieces as well as their vintage reworked vintage as part of an
IOC "retrospective." The showstopper, however, was topless models vacuuming while
wearing cashmere HotPants behind a velvet rope.

The next night Chris and Keith were walking home from dinner with Sweden (fred
flare’s favorite band) and were surprised by the packs of paparazzi outside a usually
quiet building in Chelsea. They saw tons of fashionistas clutching their Marc Jacobs gift
bags and just being fabulous. The street was like one big runway with spotlights
shining outside the event. Foxy Brown rushed out of the building and into a limo while
still doing an interview. They gave me a detailed account of their adventures the next
morning and, even though I was kinda jealous, sometimes hearing about it is just as
much fun as being there.

I did get to go to an official show in Bryant Park. My friend Jim from dEliA’s invited me
to the YM Mega Denim show held at the theater there. We arrived and waited to be
checked off the list among editors, designers, photographers, show organizers and
retailers. While waiting to go in Jim and I discussed another important Fashion Week
topic: what celebs we might see.

I really had no expectations but Jim had a plan. Before going to our seats, we would
walk down the runway to check out the names on the seats in the front row. We
noticed Justin from American Idol was front row center. This was good enough for me.
All I needed was someone specific to look for. So we headed for our seats to dig
through our gift bags, another big Fashion Week topic. Our view was almost perfect,
just two seats over and three rows back from Justin.

Wearing a long, white cinched-waist morning jacket, he was impossible to miss.
Throngs of photographers snapped away and I found myself oddly entranced by his
coat. My inner fashion editor was debating its fabric content. The jacket was super
shiny and looked almost vinyl but it turned out to be some sort of polished cotton. I
touched his collar on the way out after the show just to make sure.

Justin was definitely the most popular celeb at the show. Joey from N’Sync, who’s
performing Rent on Broadway, was seated across the runway and got very little
attention. In fact, there were people talking over him to their friends in the next row.
I’m sure Joey could give Justin some tips on what it’s like to be an American idol.
Then again…

The YM show was dedicated exclusively to denim. It was a group show featuring
denim from a variety of designers in all different ways. There were many looks
throughout the show but HotPants were a consistent theme throughout. The only
difference is in the denim world they are called "Daisy Dukes". Two words… I think.

As we sat there drinking our single-serving bottles of Evian, I was reviewing the
highlights of the week and planning my new look for Spring: 50’s prom skirts,
crinoline dresses, polka dots and absolutely no HotPants!
