| Welcome to our newest interview series here
on fredflare.com called media
blitz.
It all started cuz everyone at the office is totally obsessed with magazines! (We have quite the organized archive of everything from last week’s Star to 80’s issues of Sassy.) We thought it’d be super fun to start chatting up some of the great people behind the mags we love. This month we’re talking with Cargo’s Ariel Foxman. We met Ariel at one of our very first NYC sample sales back in 2000 when we ran the business out of our tiny apartment and Ariel was an editor at InStyle. Flash forward to 2004 where we run our business out of a tiny warehouse and Ariel is the Editor-in-Chief of Condé Nast’s newest men’s title Cargo. Okay, so who got the better deal? We’d be envious if Ariel wasn’t such a smart, stylin’ supertalent. Recently, we chatted with him about his brand-new mag for men. Okay, so pretend we're in Journalism 101... What exactly does an Editor-in-Chief do? In movie terms, I'm the director. I make sure the actors and the crew are making the most out of a script (which I am constantly rewriting) so that we can bring our target audience the most entertaining and useful experience we know how. We're already super obsessed with Cargo and the first issue just came out! Tell us more about your brand-new magazine. Cargo is a revolutionary buyers' guide for men. It's the only magazine of its kind: one that's 100% dedicated to letting guys know what's out there, what's worthwhile and what's right for them, in everything from tech and clothes to cars and grooming to culture and gear. What do you think are some of the largest misconceptions about men and shopping? The biggest one is that they don't like to shop. We've found that not only do men like to shop, but that they are shopping more for themselves than ever before. More than that: they're shopping for themselves BY themselves. It all depends on how you define shopping. If you look at it as a pastime with friends, meeting for lunch and then chatting over cute new merchandise, then no, most men would probably not identify. But, if you define shopping as “shopping around” ie. researching options, looking for value/bargains, asking friends about their experience with certain products, testing and experimenting with merchandise in stores than yes, men LOVE to shop. Regardless, whether you like to shop, hate to shop or simply have to shop, Cargo will be there to help you zero in on exactly what you need. Speaking of shopping, what's the last thing you purchased for yourself? A Thom Browne suit and shirt. What's the last thing you purchased as a gift? A massage for a friend. We know Cargo is both high-tech and low-fi ... What's a new guy gadget that we'll soon not be able to live without? An MP3 player, whether it's the iPod or one of thirty other viable options. The question is really figuring out which one out there suits your needs best. Check out our second issue (April 13) to see our feature in which we rate all the best audio players on the market. That, and a DVR (TiVo, etc.). They will both change your life! What's so old it's suddenly new? Le Tigre shirts. They're reissuing some of their famous shirts from the 80’s (and introducing some new designs as well). I'm all over those this spring. That, and Nike dunks. What music's spinning in your executive suite these days? The music of staffers buzzing in and out of my office with questions and comments about the launch and upcoming issues. That, and a little Eamon. Okay Ariel, it's speed round time! FAVE COLOR: Pale blue FAVE CANDY: Cow Tails and gummy peaches. Not together, though! FAVE MUSIC: Hip Hop, Pop, Dance and some Folk FAVE FOOD: Haru Sushi FAVE MOVIE: Annie Hall and Poltergiest 03/12/04 |
